The Abortion Monologues

From 2020-2023, I directed and adapted The Abortion Monologues, an annual project for Kalamazoo College's Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Center for Civic Engagement and Dr. Karyn Boatwright's course "Feminist Psychology of Women," with partnership from Planned Parenthood of Michigan and the Stephanie Vibbert Women's Leadership Research Center.

The project began over ten years ago when students in Dr. Boatwright's course interviewed various patients, medical providers, and colleagues of Planned Parenthood of Michigan. Each year, selected monologues were performed by students to raise awareness for reproductive and women's rights. In my involvement with the project, I led the students in conducting more interviews (particularly to include the stories of trans/gender non-conforming communities), adapting the monologues, and directing the monologues as a multi-media performance.

The civic engagement of the project included partnerships from reproductive justice organizations on campus as well as local organizations focused in racial justice, reproductive rights, and voting rights.

In 2023, in response to the Super Court overturn of Roe V. Wade, The Abortion Monologues additionally functioned as a benefit performance for the Kalamazoo YWCA's Reproductive Health/Abortion Fund.
